1/2 Utah Goldback Alpha - Aurum Gold Foil Note (24k)

The Utah 1/2 Goldback illustrates the virtue Patientia, or endurance. She is depicted as a
pioneer woman pushing a handcart through the rugged terrain of Emigration Canyon. This
canyon was the final passage for handcart companies entering the Salt Lake Valley in the mid
1800s. These brave travelers pressed forward under extreme hardship, finally arriving in the
valley after months of grueling travel. The artwork reminds us of their unwavering determination
and deep perseverance during one of the most demanding chapters of westward migration.

Flying above the pioneers are western meadowlarks, serving as symbols of the hope and
guidance needed to complete such an arduous journey. In the foreground, sego lilies—Utah’s
state flower—bloom as heralds of survival and peace. The UV layer reveals honeybees, the
state insect, swarming the lilies, while angels appear beside the pioneers to guide their
footsteps along the trail.

Each element in this piece acts as a reminder of what the pioneers endured, and what was
required of them to find patience in their suffering. Along the bottom, the enduring principle
reads: “They shall walk and not faint” — Isaiah 40:31
