Warriors Through Time – The Viking honours Ragnar Lothbrok, the legendary Norse warrior-king whose name echoes through the sagas of the Viking Age. Said to have lived in the 9th century, Lothbrok was a figure of both history and myth, renowned for his relentless raids across England and Francia through seafaring warfare. Most famously associated with the raid on Paris in 845 AD, Lothbrok led a fleet of longships up the River Seine and defeated the Frankish forces of King Charles the Bald. This audacious campaign cemented Ragnar’s reputation as one of the most feared and formidable leaders of the Viking Age.

On the obverse, Lothbrok is portrayed as a formidable and resolute warrior, captured with the fierce intensity for which he is remembered in Norse legend. Around him are sacred elements of the Norse belief and warfare : the Gjallarhorn, gilded in gold, calling gods and men alike to the final reckoning of Ragnarök; the samoa shield, representing protection and the unbreakable shield wall that defined Viking warfare; and the long axe, a hallmark of Norse combat embodying strength and the merciless efficiency of the Viking raider. Together, these elements create a powerful visual narrative of Lothbrok’s life and the enduring legacy of the Viking Age.
