Coin description
The reverse of the coin depicts the mice that can see through the window that the cat has left. They are happily dancing on the bottle of wine, and celebrate their freedom with wine and cheese. The reverse side also depicts the inscriptions: “WHEN THE CAT IS AWAY, THE MICE WILL PLAY” (the name of the coin) and “2020” (the year of issue).
 
The obverse side of the coin depicts the standard Coat of Arms of the Republic of Palau with the inscriptions: “REPUBLIC OF PALAU” (the issuing country) and “10$” (the face value).
 
Background information
‘When the cat’s away, the mice will play’ is a well-known worldwide proverb and dates to around 1600. Without supervision, people will do as they please, especially in disregarding or breaking the rules. As soon as the parents leave, the children will invite all their friends over, and when the boss is gone, everyone will stop working. A proverb is a short saying that gives advice or expresses truth. Proverbs aren’t usually literal sayings, but they are being used as figurative language to make a statement about life.
