Coin description

The reverse brings Lust and Chastity together within an elaborate Ultra High Relief baroque frame. On the left, Lust wears crimson garments and holds a wineglass beneath a red moon, surrounded by serpents, jewellery and an ornate mask. On the right, Chastity appears in flowing white robes, holding a cross among lilies and doves beneath a pale moon. A central column of sculpted ornament divides the scenes, crowned by a winged cherub’s head. Smaller cherub heads decorate the sides, while a flower with red and ivory petals joins the compositions below. The antiqued silver scrollwork frames the rich contrasting colours.

The obverse features the Public Seal of Niue within a beaded circle, surrounded by richly detailed baroque foliage and curling scrollwork. At the top, a cherub combines a halo and horns with one batlike wing and one feathered wing, reflecting the theme of opposing qualities. The words “VICES”, “AND” and “VIRTUES” are integrated into the ornamental border. “NIUE ISLAND”, the year “2026”, the denomination of 7 Dollars and “3 OZ.999 FINE SILVER” identify the issue. The antiqued finish highlights the depth and detail of the surrounding decoration.

Background information

The seven deadly sins developed within Christian moral teaching as a way of describing destructive habits and human weaknesses. Pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth were contrasted with virtues intended to guide conduct and encourage spiritual growth. Throughout medieval and Renaissance art and literature, sins and virtues were frequently personified as human figures. Their gestures, clothing and symbolic attributes made abstract ideas about temptation and moral choice immediately recognisable.

Lust and chastity are traditionally presented as opposing responses to desire. In Christian moral teaching, lust concerns sexual desire pursued without moral restraint, while chastity emphasises discipline and integrity in the expression of sexuality. Chastity encompasses fidelity within marriage as well as abstinence in other circumstances. Their opposition has inspired centuries of allegorical art exploring temptation, commitment and the choices that shape human conduct.
