Deep in the heart of the forest, a young girl waits in patient expectation. Far off in the distance there’s the sound of dogs baying in pursuit of their prey. They are after what the girl desires. But she pays them no mind. She is a huntress who doesn’t need to hunt. What she seeks, if it comes at all, will come of its own free will. The girl aims not to kill but to tame. In the taming, she will also conquer. 
 
As she sits in the middle of a small glade, waiting for her ultimate prize, woodland creatures, small and large, come to greet her. The happy singing of blue birds as they flutter about makes her smile and provides a momentary cover for the sound of the dogs still in chase. 
 
A gentle breeze stirs up the musky smell of damp leaves and dirt, mingling with the breath of wildflowers, making her drowsy. She leans against a fallen tree covered in moss and closes her eyes, gently petting the head of a doe before succumbing to sleep. 
 
Hours later, when the girl awakens, it’s to a reverential silence. Even the breeze has stilled in awe and respect. In place of the doe, the wildest creature—the true King of the forest has come and lies at the girl’s feet; his horned head resting lightly in her lap. She strokes his mane quietly before slowly standing to her feet. Without a word, knowing he will follow, the girl begins weaving her way through the wood, heading for the path that leads home. 
 
This great beast, often depicted as equal to the mighty lion, is said to only be tamed by the purity and innocence of the young maiden. Tamed but not broken. 
 
History of the Unicorn
The unicorn was first referred to in ancient mythologies of China and India. Notably different was the writings of Ctesias, a Greek historian from 400 B.C.. Moving from myth into natural history, Ctesias wrote of a creature “as big as a horse with a purple head, white body, and blue eyes.” He described it as having a long, red horn on its forehead. The horn could be anywhere between 6-10 feet long and was thought to have healing powers for the sick and the ability to make poisoned water drinkable.
 
The Unicorn has stood the test of time as a symbol of the impossible, of healing and possibility, purity, and grace. Today, when people say something—or someone—is a unicorn, the words ‘precious’ and ‘rare’ immediately come to mind.
