This coin depicts a large, rocky meteor hitting our planet, with impact in the Pacific Ocean! The meteor is comprised of a genuine chondrite meteorite, properly scaled to be of an earth-destroying size. Although this doomsday scenario has been popularized as science fiction in many books and movies, the possibility of the earth's destruction as a result of a meteor impact is real indeed! Scientists estimate that a meteor measuring just 60 miles (96 km) in diameter would be sufficient to extinguish all life on our planet.
