A myriad of creatures have graced the annual coin design, including: the White Shark, Blue-Ringed Octopus, Saltwater Crocodile, Eastern Brown Snake, Box Jelly Fish, Spider-Hunting Scorpion, Bull Ant, Death Adder, Tiger Shark, the Blue Bottle, otherwise known as the Man o' War and Tiger Shark. In 2026, The Perth Mint selected the Giant Centipede to highlight, along with the 20th release, showcasing highly venomous the Red-Back Spider.
About the Red Back Spider
The Red-Back spider is on of Australia's most recognizable and venomous arachnids, knowns for the distinctive red stripe located on the female's black abdomen. These Red-Back spider bites can cause pain, sweating, nausea and muscle weakness upon impact. Thankfully fatalities are now rare amongst humans thanks to the development of anti-venom treatments. These spiders play an important role in controlling insect populations and are an iconic part of Australia's unique wildlife ecosystem.
