The Matterhorn, with its almost perfectly symmetrical pyramid peak, is one of the most famous mountains in the world. It is a challenge even for the most experienced mountaineers and has claimed the lives of more than 500 climbers. At a height of 4,478 meters (14,692 feet), it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and Europe. It was not conquered until 1865, when a group led by Edward Whymper reached the summit.

This coin tells the exciting and tragic story of the first ascent – with many details. The coin’s edge is engraved with Edward Whymper’s famous quote from the summit: «At 1.40 p.m. the world was at our feet, and the Matterhorn was conquered. Hurrah! Not a footstep could be seen.» 4 of the 7 members of the team lost their lives on the descent. In their memory, these fearless men are immortalized on the reverse.

This impressive, numbered 2 kg coin with a diameter of 140 mm is limited to only 50 pieces worldwide. The coin features an exclusive coloration and an impressive relief of 14 mm on the reverse and 5 mm on the obverse, made possible by the innovative smartminting® technique. And the coin is only 12 mm thick. You can almost hear the wind howling around its massive structure.
