This time, the route leads to the lands of present-day Poland – the most important source of Baltic gold. The coin depicts a spear-bearing warrior watching over an elderly gatherer. At their feet stands a wicker basket filled with the gold of the North. Natural amber holds a replica of a denarius of Emperor Antoninus Pius. In the background, wooden buildings and a watchtower accompany a stylised map evoking the ancient geography of these lands: Mare Suebicum – the Baltic Sea, Vistula – the route’s main artery – and Calisia, one of its most important trading centres.
