“Portrait of Joseph Roulin” was painted by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, where multiple portraits of Roulin and his family were created between 1888 and 1889. These portraits are notable for van Gogh’s characteristic use of vibrant colors and expressive brushstrokes, seeking to capture the personality and emotions of his subjects.
 
Joseph Roulin was a postman in Arles, France, and became friends with van Gogh during the artist’s time in the region. Van Gogh regarded Roulin as a reliable friend, and admired his loyalty, as well as his willingness to pose for portraits. During this period, it allowed van Gogh to paint the Roulin family and experiment  with different artistic techniques.
 
In the painting, Roulin is depicted with a thick red beard and blue uniform against a vibrant floral background. Roulin’s distinctive features and personality were captured artfully by van Gogh with the floral background complementing the vitality of the artwork.
 
The portrait reflects van Gogh’s interest in capturing the character and emotions of his subjects, rather than focusing solely on realistic representation. The warmth and familiarity in the artwork also reflects van Gogh’s deep friendship with Roulin and his family. On a canvas of 165 x 125mm, a new minting technique called “Tri-Metal ” was applied to give this piece its remarkable weight while keeping its proportions true to the actual painting. This is made possible by combining 750g of Zinc as a center layer and 120g of copper as a base with a top layer of 2.5 oz of 999 fine Silver, resulting in a high relief. This is a limited edition of 399 pieces only. Each piece is packaged and delivered with a Certificate verifying its edition number and authenticity.
