Background information

Sekhmet, one of the most feared and revered deities of ancient Egypt, was the lion-headed goddess associated with war, destruction, and healing. She embodied the scorching power of the sun, often believed to be an extension of the sun god Ra’s wrath. According to myth, she was created by Ra to punish humanity for disobedience, and her bloodlust nearly wiped out mankind until Ra tricked her with red-dyed beer, calming her rage. Sekhmet’s duality as both a destroyer and healer made her a paradoxical but essential figure in Egyptian belief.

She was worshipped widely across Egypt, particularly in Memphis, where her cult center thrived. Thousands of statues of Sekhmet were created, often depicting her seated with a solar disk atop her head, symbolizing divine power. Priests of Sekhmet played crucial roles in healing rituals, reflecting her ability to cure as well as to inflict disease. This dual nature placed her among the most complex figures of Egyptian mythology.
