The reverse of the coin is a reproduction of the mythical shield of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war. According to the myth, the shield had the head of a Gorgon and made a terrible roaring sound during the battle. On the reverse, the inscription: “The Shield of Athena” – the name of the coin.
 
The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “NIUE ISLANDS” – the country of issue, “2022” – the year of issue, “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen and “FIVE DOLLARS” – the face value.
