Coin description
The reverse features a full colour view of the Leshan Giant Buddha, seated within the cliff with both hands resting on its knees. Warm stone tones contrast with the surrounding green foliage. An ornate silver border combines small seated figures, floral medallions and Om symbols, with lotus blossoms accenting the points of the outline. Beaded details and the stylised “Buddha” inscription along the lower edge complete the design.
 
The obverse centres on Cameroon’s coat of arms, framed by “REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN” and the denomination “1000 FRANCS CFA”. The year 2026 is divided on either side of the shield, with the national motto above in French and English. A richly decorated outer band brings together Buddha faces, seated figures, lotus blossoms, Om symbols, ornamental wheels and geometric patterns. Frosted silver details contrast with reflective proof fields, while stylised petals and rounded beads follow the distinctive lotus outline.
 
Background information
Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha or “Awakened One”, was a spiritual teacher whose teachings became the foundation of Buddhism. Buddhist tradition describes his search for freedom from suffering through ethical conduct, meditation and wisdom. His life and teachings inspired artistic traditions across Asia. The lotus became an important symbol of purity and awakening, its flower rising above the muddy water in which it grows.
 
The Leshan Giant Buddha is a 71 metre seated figure carved into a cliff in Sichuan, China. Created between 713 and 803 during the Tang dynasty, it depicts Maitreya, the future Buddha in Buddhist tradition. Its immense proportions, hands resting on its knees and composed expression demonstrate the ambition and skill of its creators. Overlooking the river below, the monument remains an outstanding example of Buddhist sculpture on a monumental scale.
